I began dancing as a child, by myself in my living room, just doing what felt good. I usually did it to my favorite star at the time, Michael Jackson, so I got a sense of my body early on in life. From that point, I enrolled in ballet, tap, and jazz. That's really where I started learning about rhythm and how to control my body movement. From there, I stayed active in music with saxophone, piano, my voice, and other instruments. I also stayed in physical sports such as fencing and tennis to stay attuned to my body.
I started ballroom dancing the summer right after my sophomore year in high school. My friend and I wandered into the studio after the last day of the school year, and we started dancing that next month. I started out with just Swing dancing in a group, then expanded into Salsa, Waltz, Argentine Tango, and anything else I could learn. My friend dropped out after a while, but I stuck with it, because I loved this new way of expressing myself.
I love to teach, because I like meeting new people and allowing them to experience the joy that comes with truly connecting the mind with the body. That's really what I try to do with my lessons; I show people the means by which they can come to understand the body. In that regard, I am a facilitator of self knowledge. Socrates said, “Know thyself” and I truly believe in that simple statement. So talk to me if you're interested in rediscovering the body's potential.
