What is Zumba©?

What is Zumba©? Zumba©, (pronounced Zoomba) combines high energy and motivating music (primarily Latin music) with unique moves and combinations that allow the Zumba© participants to dance away their worries. It is based on the principle that a workout should be "FUN AND EASY TO DO" allowing Zumba© participants to stick to the Zumba© Fitness program and achieve long-term health benefits. Zumba© is a “feel-happy” workout that is great for both the body and the mind.

History of Zumba©

Celebrity fitness trainer, "Beto" Perez, stumbled upon the concept of Latin inspired fitness in his native country of Colombia (South America) in the mid 1990's. One day, he walked into his class and realized that he had forgotten his aerobics music, and his only option was to grab whatever tapes he had in his car. Beto’s tapes were comprised of the songs that he loved, the traditional Latin salsa and merengue music with which he had been raised. But it was a challenge to improvise a whole class on the spot using non-traditional aerobics music. Beto rose to the challenge and from this last-minute improvisation was born a revolutionary fitness program – Zumba©! The class soon became the most popular class at his fitness facility.

A few common questions

Q: What do I wear to class?
A: Workout attire, loose fitting, breathable clothing is best.  Wear shoes that are comfortable and allow freedom of movement to pivot.  Dance Fitness type tennis shoes, or the new dance sneakers are great!  A crosstraining type shoe is good too.  Avoid a running shoe as it doesn't allow for much lateral movement. 

Q: I have NO dance background or rhythm.  Can I do Zumba©!  
A: Absolutely!  Zumba© is for everyone.  All of the dance steps used are basic steps. If you are already an accomplished dancer, you’ll do great.   Remember, that the more classes you take the more familiar you will become and therefore more comfortable.  Be sure to not give up.  Keep at it and before you know it you'll be "shakin" it with the best of them!   

Q: Do I need to bring anything with me? 
A: This class will make you sweat, big time!  Be sure to bring a small towel, and water, water, water! 

I’m not use to working out, will I be able to do this?
YES! Zumba© utilizes “interval training” We do faced paced movements and alternate with slower paced movements. This class is perfect for all fitness levels. You can take the entire class at your own pace and modify movements and intensity.

Q. How many calories can I burn? 
A: This is individual.  Everyone will be different and there are many factors involved including:  intensity of movement, age, weight, etc.  Generally speaking you could burn anywhere from 300-700 calories.  Once again it's individual.
